Progressive Turnout Project endorses Lisa Brown and Kim Schrier in Washington
Grassroots-funded organization supports Democratic candidates for Congress

CHICAGO—Progressive Turnout Project today endorsed Lisa Brown and Kim Schrier in their 2018 campaigns for Congress. The grassroots-funded organization is proud to support the two voting rights champions who will support a progressive agenda that advances every Americans right to vote.
“Progressive Turnout Project is proud to support Lisa Brown and Kim Schrier for Congress because we know they will fight to restore the Voting Rights Act and expand access to the ballot box for all Americans,” said Executive Director Alex Morgan.
Lisa Brown is an economist, professor, and former state legislator challenging long-time Republican incumbent Cathy McMorris Rodgers in Washington’s 5th congressional district. During her time in the Washington legislature, Brown supported efforts to enact the National Popular Vote Act as well as campaign finance legislation to bring greater transparency to Washington politics.
“We know Lisa Brown will be a voting rights champion because she already has a proven progressive track record when it comes to expanding the electorate,” said Morgan. “While Cathy McMorris Rodgers has been a rubber stamp for Donald Trump and Paul Ryan’s Republican agenda, Lisa will be an independent voice for Washington.”
Dr. Kim Schrier is a first-time candidate running for the open seat representing Washington’s 8th congressional district against career politician Dino Rossi. Schrier has spent her career serving families across the 8th district, knows their stories and their struggles, and will lift up their voices in Congress.
“Kim knows that being progressive means working toward a more equal and just society in which every person has the opportunity to thrive and succeed,” said Morgan.
Today’s endorsements are part of a larger effort by Progressive Turnout Project to expand its impact in the 2018 election. The grassroots-funded organization released an expansive watch list in January and followed up with the announcement of 18 field programs in May. PTP hired a Fellows Program Coordinator in July to support additional candidates.
“Our more than 3 million supporters and 230,000 grassroots donors have been loud and clear that we need to do everything we can to win by supporting candidates who will represent our values and defend our democracy,” said Morgan.
Progressive Turnout Project asks campaigns to complete an endorsement questionnaire that asks about critical voting rights issues such as the restoration of the Voting Rights Act, automatic voter registration, early voting, no excuse absentee voting, and voter ID laws. The organization will continue to announce endorsements as it receives and reviews completed candidate questionnaires.
