President Biden’s Bloody Sunday Executive Order Will Protect Access to the Ballot Box

CHICAGO On the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Americans are reminded of the continued struggle to secure civil rights for all Americans. In Congress, the late Rep. John Lewis focused his efforts on protecting and expanding the right to vote. Today, President Biden honored that legacy by signing an Executive Order to promote access to voting. Progressive Turnout Project applauds President Biden’s action as a critical step in the fight for the soul of our democracy as Americans wait for the Senate to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, and H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

PTP Executive Director Alex Morgan released the following statement:

“President Biden has honored the legacy of Bloody Sunday not just with words, but action. The Executive Order signed today will expand access to voter registration and election information, including directing federal agencies to assist states with voter registration efforts, removing barriers to the ballot box for voters with disabilities, and providing voting access to citizens in federal custody. While today’s action is not a substitute for the comprehensive voting rights reform we need to fix our broken democracy, it is an important step that federal agencies can take today to protect and expand the right to vote.”
