CHICAGO–Progressive Turnout Project kicked off its 2024 Postcards to Swing States program on Wednesday. The initiative will organize more than 203,000 volunteers across all 50 states to handwrite more than 26 million postcards to inconsistent Democratic voters this fall–more than any other organization. PTP, the largest voter turnout organization in the country, will invest $1.82 million in the program–part of the group’s more than $30 million investment in the 2024 election. As of Wednesday, volunteers signed up to write more than 2.5 million postcards.
“Our research over the past three cycles has proven that handwritten postcards can boost voter turnout by an average of 1 percent,” said PTP President Alex Morgan. “We love using data-driven methods to boost Democratic turnout and our volunteers love to write postcards, so this is a match made in heaven that will make all the difference for President Biden and Democrats up and down the ticket this November.”
Postcards to Swing States will reach voters across at least 11 key presidential and Senate battleground states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. Organizers will add 50 U.S. House and 75 state legislative battleground districts to the program later this year.
Volunteers can easily sign up to receive postcards on the Progressive Turnout Project website. In addition to the postcards, volunteers receive instructions on research-based social pressure messages proven to increase turnout.
Based on previous research, the 26 million postcards will increase turnout by 260,000 voters. Progressive Turnout Project expects the postcards to increase turnout by 13,658 votes in Georgia, more than the vote margin in the state in the 2020 presidential election.
The postcard effort will dovetail with Progressive Turnout Project’s door-to-door and relational organizing programs. Overall, the group plans to knock on more than 5 million doors and reach more than 36 million voters this year.
